Educate an Orphan

Background Information

Although no official statistics exist, there are hundreds of thousands of orphaned children in Somaliland, many of them missing both parents.

Over 50% of all school-age children in Somaliland do not go to schools, with orphaned children and those from marginalized backgrounds making up the majority of out-of-school children. Many children are forced to work to earn for themselves or their families. And due to child labor, many children permanently miss out on education and hence forfeit their prospects of getting good jobs and making bright futures.

In many cases, the demanding responsibility of childcare is the sole responsibility of struggling mothers who are employed in informal and poorly performing sectors of the economy. These mothers sell milk and small goods on streets, or work as maids for better-off families in the city to ensure food is on the table for their children.

The majority of these struggling mothers often cannot find any self-employment or other income-generating activities, making it difficult for their children to get access to basic sustainable food, let alone education and self-development opportunities.

  • Educate an Orphan initiative was launched in 2018 and has an overall goal of providing orphaned children with education opportunities. The initiative targets orphaned children who have never been to school or dropped out due to financial challenges. It takes $15 to $25 to fully sponsor a child’s education, donated on a quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis.

► Achievement: first sponsored child graduated from class 8 and started secondary school in 2021. Scholarships secured for five (13) children so far.
